  • #12444: Fixed pytest.approx which now correctly takes into account ~collections.abc.Mapping keys order to compare them.

  • #13634: Blocking a conftest.py file using the -p no: option is now explicitly disallowed.

    Previously this resulted in an internal assertion failure during plugin loading.

    Pytest now raises a clear UsageError explaining that conftest files are not plugins and cannot be disabled via -p.

  • #13734: Fixed crash when a test raises an exceptiongroup with __tracebackhide__ = True.

  • #14195: Fixed an issue where non-string messages passed to unittest.TestCase.subTest() were not printed.

Improved documentation

  • #13388: Clarified documentation for -p vs PYTEST_PLUGINS plugin loading and fixed an incorrect -p example.

  • Fixed total coverage computation to always be consistent, regardless of reporting settings. Previously some reports could produce different total counts, and consequently can make --cov-fail-under behave different depending on reporting options.   • Improve handling of ResourceWarning from sqlite3.

    The plugin adds warning filter for sqlite3 ResourceWarning unclosed database (since 6.2.0). It checks if there is already existing plugin for this message by comparing filter regular expression. When filter is specified on command line the message is escaped and does not match an expected message. A check for an escaped regular expression is added to handle this case.

    With this fix one can suppress ResourceWarning from sqlite3 from command line::

    pytest -W "ignore:unclosed database in <sqlite3.Connection object at:ResourceWarning" ...

  • Various improvements to documentation. 7.0.0 (2025-09-09)

  • Dropped support for subprocesses measurement.

    It was a feature added long time ago when coverage lacked a nice way to measure subprocesses created in tests. It relied on a .pth file, there was no way to opt-out and it created bad interations with coverage's new patch system <https://coverage.readthedocs.io/en/latest/config.html#run-patch>_ added in 7.10 <https://coverage.readthedocs.io/en/7.10.6/changes.html#version-7-10-0-2025-07-24>_.

    To migrate to this release you might need to enable the suprocess patch, example for .coveragerc:

    This release also requires at least coverage 7.10.6.

  • Replaced the complicated and broken code of pytest_benchmark.utils.clonefunc with a simple return of the input. That function was supposed to allow benchmarking with the cost of PyPy JIT included but it's a hassle to maintain.
  • Moved the instrumentation pause outside the round loops (in addition to tracing, profiling is paused too). Pedantic mode will keep doing this per round (as the user manually controls the round count). This is necessary because in some scenarios setting and unsetting the tracer too much will overflow an internal counter (found to cause "OverflowError: events set too many times" at least on Python 3.13).

  • Fixed broken hooks handling on pytest 8.1 or later (the TypeError: import_path() missing 1 required keyword-only argument: 'consider_namespace_packages' issue). Unfortunately this sets the minimum supported pytest version to 8.1.

Mypy 2.0

We’ve just uploaded mypy 2.0.0 to the Python Package Index (PyPI). Mypy is a static type checker for Python. This release includes new features, performance improvements and bug fixes. There are also changes to options and defaults. You can install it as follows:

python3 -m pip install -U mypy

Enable --local-partial-types by Default

This flag affects the inference of types based on assignments in other scopes. For now, explicitly disabling this continues to be supported, but this support will be removed in the future as the legacy behaviour is hard to support with other current and future features in mypy, like the daemon or the new implementation of flexible redefinitions.

Enable --strict-bytes by Default

Per PEP 688, mypy no longer treats bytearray and memoryview values as assignable to the bytes type.

New Behavior for --allow-redefinition

The --allow-redefinition flag now behaves like --allow-redefinition-new in mypy 1.20 and earlier. The new behavior is generally more flexible. For example, you can have different types for a variable in different blocks:
