Closes #999

Overview

This pull request adds support for configurable TLS Supported Groups (key-exchange curves) to the ctls backend and CLI:

  • Allows operators to constrain offered key-exchange groups to test quantum-safe hybrid compatibility (e.g. X25519MLKEM768) and classical curve preferences.
  • Exposes configured_groups in JSON results for full scan reproducibility and provenance alongside observed key_exchange.

Changes

  • Client Configuration:
    • Added TLSGroups goflags.StringSlice to clients.Options and TLSGroups []string to clients.ConnectOptions.
    • Added CLI flag -tls-groups / -tg in cmd/tlsx/main.go.
  • Parsing & Canonical Representation:
    • Added clients.ToCurveIDs parser supporting canonical group names (X25519MLKEM768, X25519, CurveP256, CurveP384, CurveP521, SecP256r1MLKEM768, SecP384r1MLKEM1024, MLKEM1024), common aliases (x25519_mlkem768, p-256, secp256r1, etc.), and numeric codepoints (23, 29, 4588, etc.).
    • Added clients.CurveIDsToNames ensuring canonical spelling in JSON responses.
    • Preserves caller-specified ordering for curve preference testing.
  • Backend Execution:
    • Assigned tls.Config.CurvePreferences in pkg/tlsx/tls/tls.go (ctls backend).
    • Populated ConfiguredGroups []string in clients.Response.
  • Backend & Fallback Semantics:
    • Enforced strict validation: rejected -tls-groups when scan-mode is auto, ztls, or openssl to prevent silent degradation or unconstrained handshakes.
    • Rejected unrecognized group names immediately at validation before scanning.
    • Kept defaults completely unchanged when -tls-groups is omitted.
  • Testing:
    • Table-driven unit tests for group parser, order preservation, aliases, and error conditions in pkg/tlsx/clients/curves_test.go.
    • End-to-end TLS test cases for single group success, unsupported group handshake rejection, preference ordering, and defaults in pkg/tlsx/tls/tls_test.go.
    • CLI runner validation tests rejecting invalid scan-modes and unsupported group names in internal/runner/runner_test.go.
    • Backend rejection tests in pkg/tlsx/ztls/ztls_test.go and pkg/tlsx/auto/auto_test.go.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a -tls-groups (-tg) option to configure TLS key-exchange groups when using ctls scan mode.
    • TLS responses can report the configured groups, including when a connection fails with probe status enabled.
    • Group names accept supported aliases and numeric codepoints; the configured order is preserved.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Added validation for unsupported groups and clear errors when TLS groups are used with scan modes other than ctls.

Walkthrough

The change adds configurable TLS key-exchange groups for the ctls backend. It adds group parsing, validation, connection configuration, and response reporting. The auto, OpenSSL, and ztls constructors reject configurations that include TLS groups.

Changes

TLS Group Configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Group input and validation
cmd/tlsx/main.go, internal/runner/..., pkg/tlsx/clients/clients.go, pkg/tlsx/clients/curves.go, pkg/tlsx/clients/curves_test.go
The CLI and client options accept TLS groups. Conversion helpers normalize names, resolve aliases and numeric codepoints, preserve order, and reject unsupported entries. Runner validation checks the scan mode and group list.
ctls connection and reporting
pkg/tlsx/tls/tls.go, pkg/tlsx/tls/tls_test.go, pkg/tlsx/tlsx.go
The ctls client applies configured groups to TLS configuration and reports explicit groups in responses, including failed-probe responses. Tests cover negotiation, preference ordering, per-connection overrides, and default behavior.
Reject groups in other scan modes
pkg/tlsx/auto/..., pkg/tlsx/openssl/..., pkg/tlsx/ztls/...
The auto, OpenSSL, and ztls constructors reject configurations with TLS groups. Tests check that construction returns an error and no client.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 4e781

Some group selections cannot produce the requested scan, and per-call scans can misreport or ignore their group constraints. Resolve these gaps before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 4e781

Per-connection group restrictions can be silently ignored during fallback, and failed scans can report a different group selection from the one attempted. These gaps affect trust in constrained TLS scan results. Command-line validation and global configuration checks limit exposure.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The ctls-only restriction is enforced for global configuration but not for public per-connection TLSGroups. A service constructed without global groups accepts per-call groups in auto, ztls, or openssl mode. Auto applies them to its ctls attempt, then can return success from a fallback backend that ignores them. This newly permits a constrained scan request to succeed without enforcing its requested groups.
  • Low · reliability · observed: When both global and per-connection groups are set, ctls attempts the per-connection selection, but an exhausted failed scan with ProbeStatus enabled reports the global selection in configured_groups. Successful responses use the effective configuration correctly. The newly inconsistent failure contract undermines provenance used to assess TLS-group compatibility; it does not itself turn a failed handshake into a successful result.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The constraint-enforcement gap affects callers using per-connection groups through the public service or direct backend APIs. A target controls its handshake behavior but does not need authority to alter scanner configuration. Repeated use can affect results across caller-selected targets; the inspected path does not demonstrate additional tenant, credential, or infrastructure authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — For an auto client created without global groups, a caller can request a restricted per-call group set. A target that fails that ctls attempt but accepts a supported fallback handshake can obtain a successful scan result without satisfying the requested group constraint. This is supported by static dispatch and configuration flow, not an executed exploit. Fallback existed before the PR; accepting a new restriction without preserving it is the introduced condition.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — CLI validation rejects nonempty groups outside ctls and rejects unrecognized values. Auto, ztls, and openssl constructors also reject global groups. These controls prevent the ordinary global-option fallback case, but do not validate per-call groups supplied after construction.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — On ctls timeout, the connection is closed and the handshake goroutine is drained before returning; ordinary handshake errors also close the connection, and later terminal paths use deferred closure. Group configuration errors return before dialing. These existing containment paths remain applicable to group-constrained attempts, although they do not resolve the failure-provenance mismatch.

Explanation

Issue #999 functional scope is implemented: the CLI and client options accept TLS groups, ToCurveIDs preserves order and canonicalizes aliases, ctls applies CurvePreferences, JSON includes configured_groups, and non-ctls backends reject the option. The parser, runner, backend, and general TLS tests cover the other requested cases. The TLS test file does not include explicit constrained-handshake cases for both TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3, which Issue #999 lists in its verification requirements.

Reject per-call TLSGroups outside ctls.

Service.ConnectWithOptions forwards non-empty ConnectOptions.TLSGroups to every backend. In auto, the ctls attempt can apply the groups, but fallback to ztls or openssl can succeed while silently ignoring them. Direct ztls.ConnectWithOptions, openssl.ConnectWithOptions, and auto.ConnectWithOptions calls have the same gap. The existing guards validate only constructor-level Options.TLSGroups.

Reject non-empty per-call groups at the service boundary and in the exported non-ctls client methods.

site:github.com/golang/go/blob/go1.25.0/src/crypto/tls/common.go CurvePreferences unknown CurveID ignored ClientHello

💡 Result:

In **Go 1.25.0**, an unknown `CurveID` in `tls.Config.CurvePreferences` is ignored when choosing curves—not rejected just because it is present. `curvePreferences` filters the configured preferences through Go’s supported curve order; unsupported entries therefore don’t make it into the list used for key exchange. This is an inference from the implementation, not a documented promise about all future versions. ([github.com](https://github.com/golang/go/blob/go1.25.0/src/crypto/tls/handshake_server_tls13.go))

That means an unknown ID is **not advertised in the ClientHello**. If the configured list contains no recognized, usable curves, the handshake may fail rather than silently falling back to defaults. The `common.go` page for the exact tag timed out during lookup, so I can’t verify its comment text directly; the linked sources are the Go 1.25.0 implementation files.

Reject TLS groups that Go 1.25 cannot negotiate.

go.mod declares Go 1.25.0, but that toolchain does not implement SecP256r1MLKEM768, SecP384r1MLKEM1024, or MLKEM1024. ToCurveIDs accepts these IDs and assigns them to tls.Config.CurvePreferences. Go 1.25 filters unsupported configured IDs when selecting curves, so -tg MLKEM1024 does not constrain the ClientHello to that group. If no supported group remains, the handshake can fail.

Remove these IDs from canonicalCurveMap, the numeric switch, and SupportedTLSGroups, or reject them explicitly in ToCurveIDs.

Report the per-connection TLS groups on failed probes.

When ProbeStatus is enabled, ConnectWithOptions builds the ctls configuration with the per-call options.TLSGroups. If the connection fails, the response currently prefers s.options.TLSGroups, so ConfiguredGroups can report the service list instead of the groups used by the failed connection.
