on Apr 3, 2026 You spoke my mind, bro. I also encountered a similar issue while using the Codex app on Mac.
Reacted by WizmannI second this request. The narrow chat window requires clumsy scrolling for code bases with longer lines. Expanding the chat window to fit the available width is an absolute requirement. Chat text should keep its current maximum width, but diff, patch, code blocks must expand to all available horizontal space.
Insane this isn't a feature

Reacted by denis bider, Ciprian Radu and Zhengfengwould really appreciate having this feature
Has anyone tried this? (https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1sp4r7w/make_codexapp_wider/)
Seems like quite a large patch to do this though, so I'm hesitant before checking the code and right now don't have to spare time to do that, its nice to have but not worth risking disrupting my main workflow if 3rd party patch that nobody else has commented on breaks it. Let me know if anyone else tries it / has thoughts.
Personally I'm going to wait for an official fix to the app, fingers crossed one comes.
+1
Would be useful to allow switching between default width and full width
I had also reported this issue 5382991318. It's September, and you still haven't done something this simple for months.
Adding a macOS use case and a related settings clarity issue.
Environment: ChatGPT/Codex desktop app on macOS, version 26.1007.30912 (build 20156).
When the window is widened, assistant replies still use a capped central column, leaving substantial unused space on both sides. This is inconvenient for long technical answers, code blocks, and tables.
There is already a "Full width pages" preference in Appearance, but it applies only to Pages documents. Enabling it does not widen conversation content. The generic wording made it easy to expect it to affect chat as well.
Requested behavior:
- Add a separate "Chat content width" preference: Default / Full width.
- In Full width mode, let assistant replies use the available chat-pane width, accounting for open sidebars and panels.
- Keep the current default layout and persist the user's personal preference across sessions.
- Clarify that the existing Pages width preference applies to Pages documents only.
This would make better use of wide displays while preserving the current reading width for users who prefer it.

on Oct 11, 2026 More actionsI would also like a full-width chat layout in the Codex desktop app. The current chat content area feels too narrow, and I want to use more of the available horizontal space.
Requested behavior:
- Add a clearly named Chat content width setting under Appearance, with Default / Wide / Full width options.
- Allow a custom maximum content width, ideally with a preview or a draggable control.
- In Full width mode, let chat content follow the available chat-pane width as sidebars and panels open or close, while retaining modest margins.
- Apply the selected width consistently to assistant replies, tables, code blocks, and the composer.
- Remember the selection across chats and app restarts.
Please expose this as an optional preference so each user can choose the reading width that suits their screen. If a separate Pages width preference exists, please make its scope clear and keep the chat width control easy to find.
中文补充:当前 Codex 聊天正文展示区域太窄,希望增加“默认 / 宽屏 / 全宽”显示选项,支持自由调节正文宽度并记住设置,让正文、表格和代码充分利用窗口空间。

Please add support for adjustable chat content width in Codex App.
Right now, the chat body stays relatively narrow even when I hide the sidebar or make the window much wider. Most of the extra space becomes empty margin instead of increasing readable content width.
This makes long technical responses harder to read and requires much more scrolling than necessary. The issue is especially noticeable on high-resolution displays.

Platform: Windows OS
Additional information
This is mainly a readability and productivity issue, not a font-size issue. Zoom and font adjustments only help partially because they do not change the underlying layout constraint.
