Support changing font family in IDE Extension #14738

Description

@PMExtra

What version of the IDE extension are you using?

26.311.21342

What subscription do you have?

Business

Which IDE are you using?

VS Code

What platform is your computer?

Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.26200.0 x64

What issue are you seeing?

The Codex VSCode extension currently appears to use --vscode-font-family for its UI instead of the chat-specific font variable --vscode-chat-font-family.

VSCode provides a dedicated setting:

chat.fontFamily

which is exposed to extensions via the CSS variable:

--vscode-chat-font-family

This variable is used by the built-in Chat UI and by several other chat-based extensions so that users can customize the font used in chat interfaces without affecting the rest of the workbench.

However, the Codex extension seems to rely on --vscode-font-family, and in some cases the variable is redefined inside the webview, which prevents users from customizing the chat font consistently.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

The Codex UI ignores chat.fontFamily, causing the chat interface to use a different font from the rest of the VSCode chat ecosystem.

More specifically, Codex will display Chinese characters incorrectly. This is because the default Segoe UI font will interpret Chinese characters as Japanese or other fonts.

What is the expected behavior?

Follow the correct font settings, just like Claude Code:

    The Codex extension doesn't currently support modification of the font family. It does support control over the font size. See this explanation for details.

    I will change this from a bug report to a feature request, and we'll see if other users upvote it.

    @etraut-openai Thanks for the clarification.

    My point is not that Codex needs to add a new font setting. VSCode already provides a built-in chat font configuration via chat.fontFamily, exposed to extensions through the CSS variable --vscode-chat-font-family.

    Other chat extensions such as Claude Code and Copilot respect this setting automatically. Currently Codex seems to rely on --vscode-font-family, so the chat font cannot be customized consistently.

    It would be great if Codex could follow --vscode-chat-font-family to align with VSCode's existing chat UI conventions.

    Claude vscode extension already support this after a lots of discussion, every extension should support this.

    @Naz-Ovh

    Following up on my earlier comment: I’m still seeing this in 26.51007.21434, using VS Code with WSL. My chat.fontFamily is set to 'Google Sans Flex 9pt 9pt'. Claude picks it up, but Codex keeps the default UI font.

    I saw the clarification that font-family customization isn’t supported yet. Is support for VS Code’s existing chat font setting being considered?
