basabot builds open agricultural robotics on the legacy of Jorge Oteiza. Without vainly pretending to reach even the edge of his shadow, we borrowed the surname to give shape to what we read in his work: the search for the essence of art and its role in society, art as a human activity whose purpose is to create beauty and transform the world, and — as we believe too — art that must be universal and open to everyone. His work cut deep into the worldview of our peoples, and from that we set out to make something lucid enough to transform the spaces, forms and voids that run through our non-places.

Oteiza emptied the sculpture until what was left was the space it refused to occupy. A machine that works among people is the same problem with something real at stake: what makes it safe is not what it carries, it is the space it will not enter. We build that hollow deliberately, and we keep it open — every line here is AGPL-3.0-or-later, because a tool you cannot read is a tool you cannot trust with a field, a harvest or a family.

The work is named after the figures that already live in these valleys. Tartalo is the one-eyed giant: the rover, force without judgement, hands that press the earth. Mari is who decides — she holds the ring that once bound the giant's victims, and today it binds him. Eguzki is the sun that pushes. Basajaun and the Jentilak scatter the seed on the sunny side and gather the fruit. To the patient subject the void arrives as fruit; the will that gives it meaning is theirs.

De él, sin pretender vanamente llegar siquiera a rozar su sombra, robamos el apellido para tratar de plasmar lo que interpretamos de su legado. Su trabajo marcó una huella profunda en la cosmovisión contemporánea de nuestros pueblos, y a consecuencia de ello planteamos una obra lúcida que ayude a transformar los espacios, formas y vacíos que recorren nuestros no-lugares. Para Oteiza el arte es una actividad humana fundamental que busca la creación de belleza y la transformación del mundo; y cree, como nosotros, que debe ser universal y accesible a todos.

Oteiza vació la escultura hasta dejar el espacio que se negaba a ocupar. Una máquina que trabaja entre personas es el mismo problema con algo real en juego: lo que la hace segura no es lo que carga, es el espacio en el que no entra. Ese hueco lo construimos a propósito, y lo dejamos abierto — todo aquí es AGPL-3.0-or-later, porque una herramienta que no puedes leer es una herramienta a la que no puedes confiar un campo, una cosecha ni una familia.

La obra toma el nombre de las figuras que ya habitan estos valles. Tartalo es el gigante de un solo ojo: el rover, fuerza sin juicio, manos que castigan la tierra. Mari es quien decide — suyo es hoy el anillo que antaño ataba a las víctimas del gigante, y hoy lo ata a él. Eguzki es el sol que empuja. Basajaun y los Jentilak esparcen la semilla en la solana (Iguzkitza) y recogen el fruto. Al sujeto paciente le llega el vacío en forma de fruto: suya es la voluntad que le dé sentido.
