Is it xbps-install or xbps-rindex that can't count properly?

If there are several versions of packages in a local repo, xbps-install thinks that e.g. 0.9 is a higher version number than 0.10.
Is this an issue of xbps-install or the index that xbps-rindex writes and xbps-install accesses?

Or is this even some general issue like a bash setting on how numbers are sorted?

Is there anything that I could change to make xbps-install "count / sort properly"?

There are no known issues and it has been working as expected for years.

% xbps-uhelper cmpver -v 0.9 0.10
0.9 < 0.10

You need to provide examples and logs.

It does not care what version the package is, it force adds it regardless.

What you are doing by using xbps-rindex -fa *.xbps is make the shell sort all files matching *.xbps alphanumerically.

echo *.xbps
libwacom-2.10.0_1.noarch.xbps libwacom-2.18.0_0.noarch.xbps libwacom-2.8.0_1.noarch.xbps

Then xbps-rindex will just add each package you've given it as argument one by one, and then the last one wins (libwacom-2.8.0_1.noarch.xbps), since you used the force flag.

No, even if there was, there would be no guarantee that the shell version sort would be exactly the same as xbps. Comparing versions is simple until its more than just 1.2.3, versions can include letters and keywords.

Just don't use the -f flag unless you actually want to force downgrade packages. And even then you really shouldn't have to manually index packages, xbps-src does it already.

My local repo is on a separate zfs data set from the xbps-src binpkgs. I copy the ones I need over to make sure I don't accidentally lose them in case I have to nuke the void-packages directory or for some other reason. And for this separate local repo I guess I have to index manually.

At least now I know why this counter-intuitive sorting happens.
