Below are goals that were written in early late 2025/early 2026 as goals for 2027. Please review at end of 2026.
- By the end of 2027, the Software Carpentry novice curriculum will include a GitLab alternative for the git lesson. (any other hosting services we think are needed, codeberg/forgejo might be interesting)
- Toby: please discuss how these variants would be maintained. E.g. separate Maintainer teams for each variant? Single Maintainer team for all? +1
- By the end of 2027, the Software Carpentry novice curriculum will include a lesson that teaches using in a graphical interface (GitHub or a free, open, cross-platform GUI)
- The previous two can be summarized as a review of the Git lesson. This is difficult and will be easy to keep discussing in circles. Multiple topics to discuss:
- graphical interface
- whether to split into a lesson on git and one on github
- gitlab as an alternative
- branches: there has been a very long-standing discussion on whether we should have an episode on branches and merging (I think we totally should)
- In 2027, the SWC GC will host a sprint to help new contributors make changes to the lessons and to close as many issues with PRs as possible.
