[Feature]: Chrome extension for tailoring and uploading resume

It's very inconvenient every time I want to tailor a resume I have to manually open the app , copy the job description and other info , tailor my resume to fit on one page, save the PDF, then upload the new resume PDF to the job application.

I would love if there can be a Chrome extension that detects when you're on a job posting page and automatically parse out the description , tailor the resume, and upload the new PDF to the application in one click.

Describe alternatives you've considered

Simplify is another chrome extension that does this but it's paid.

I've built an initial version of the Chrome extension described in this issue. PR: #821

What's included in the MVP:

• Manifest V3 extension (apps/chrome-extension/) with no broad host permissions — only activeTab, storage, and scripting
• Job detection on LinkedIn, Indeed, Greenhouse, Lever, Glassdoor, and Workday — extracts job title, company, and description directly from the page using chrome.scripting.executeScript
• One-time setup: upload your master resume PDF/DOCX from the popup (calls the existing POST /api/v1/resumes/upload endpoint), or paste an existing Resume ID; saved to chrome.storage.local
• One-click tailoring: sends the job description to POST /api/v1/jobs/upload, then POST /api/v1/resumes/improve, and displays the ATS score, missing keywords, and recommendations inline in the popup
• "Open in Resume Matcher" button opens the frontend (localhost:3000) for PDF download
• Backend CORS fix: adds allow_origin_regex for chrome-extension:// origins so the popup can reach the local backend (extension IDs are dynamic, making an exact-match list impractical)

Not included yet (deferred to follow-up PRs):

• Auto-filling job application forms (each ATS portal has a completely different structure — very high maintenance)
• Exportable PDF report (can layer on top once the extension is merged)

Sure! The Chrome extension is plain HTML/JS so there's no build step. Here's how to test it:

1. Get the branch

cd Resume-Matcher
git checkout feature/chrome-extension

2. Run the backend (the extension talks to localhost:8000)

cd apps/backend
cp .env.example .env   # add your LLM API key
uv sync
uv run app

3. Load the extension in Chrome

• Open Chrome and go to chrome://extensions
• Enable Developer mode (top-right toggle)
• Click Load unpacked and select the apps/chrome-extension/ folder

4. Test it

• Click the Resume Matcher icon in your Chrome toolbar
• Upload your master resume PDF/DOCX (one-time setup)
• Navigate to a job listing on LinkedIn, Indeed, Greenhouse, Lever, Glassdoor, or Workday
• Click the extension icon — it should auto-detect the job title, company, and description
• Hit Tailor Resume to see the ATS score, missing keywords, and recommendations in the popup

@gingeekrishna I tested your branch , but getting an error when trying to tailor resume:

Thanks for testing @mat926! Found the bug — the error when clicking Tailor Resume was caused by a type mismatch between two endpoints:

• POST /api/v1/jobs/upload returns job_id as a list (["uuid-here"])
• POST /api/v1/resumes/improve expects job_id as a single string ("uuid-here")

The extension was passing the whole array directly, which caused a 422 validation error from the backend. Fixed by extracting the first element: jobRes.job_id[0].

The fix is pushed to the branch — please pull the latest and try again:

git pull origin feature/chrome-extension

Then reload the extension in Chrome (chrome://extensions → click the refresh icon on the extension) and try Tailor Resume again. Let me know if you hit anything else!
