I'm so sorry for what sounds like a truly painful experience. I promise you if we could see how that could happen, we'd avoid it. Can you help us with any details about how this happened? And, again, so sorry that happened to you.

I can confirm that. You just have to cycle through all the patches using MIDI Program Change. I don't know if the same thing happens with the web version. Some patches are simply way too loud when you switch through them. One patch was so loud my ears needed time to recover. Since then, I don't put my headphones all the way on when I'm going through patches.

Thank you for the additional context! I have not gone through listening to every patch and checking that it does not overflow. To explain our process: We built a machine that emulates a Juno 106 and a DX7 with some accuracy but certainly not perfectly, then we incorporated the unmodified patch sets that shipped with those two machines -- rather than, say, going through and developing 256 patches one at a time by ourselves.

If you can direct me to the patches that are most egregious, I could go in and modify them by hand to protect future users from your bad experiences. I realize you may have already suffered enough, but I am making this offer anyway.

Same thing for me. Quite a few patches are so loud for me that they're distorted. Probably 1/5 are like this. Just within the first 20 or so, the 2 below are the worst offenders. I have to set their volume to around 0.05 to match the level of the other patches:

• A24 Donald Pluc
• A31 Clock Chime

Not sure what's causing it, but it's persistent across flashes for me. I've been experimenting a lot, so I'm completely resetting pretty often, and the problematic ones are always like this on fresh installs, etc.

On my end, this happens regardless of how I'm outputting the audio. It happens through all of these so far:

• Headphones (this is how I first ran into the issue and thought I blew the speakers... and my ears)
• Volt 2 audio interface
• An older set of Logitech speakers

It's possible that the issue is due to the type of aux cable being used. I only own TRS aux cables, so I have not had a chance to try a TS. If some patches are stereo and others mono, maybe most patches are hitting phase cancellation and then when you get to a mono patch, it's significantly louder? Just an idea, because I don't know what else would cause this (unless it is actually in the code).

Sorry for my abbreviated swearing. I just was rattled from having to change my underwear in the middle of the day. (I am making light, but it really was dangerous levels. I am more concerned that FireFox allowed that through, frankly. Seems like a neat, new attack vector could be built.)

All I did was open the Web version to see what this is all about, rejected midi request, went to the Drum Machine bubble... goofed around, then pattern sequencer bubble.. couldn't tell what to do.... then the "Play a complex FM synthesis" then "Play all built-in sound patches"... and that does it. It's doing it, right now. Awful, awful.

Did not press any keys or anything.

Like, I'm in a proper studio, here, and I took the interface volume way down this time, but the input levels are pegged clipping, man. And, it's going through the full spectrum of highs and lows and noisey sounding things. No idea what this product even is, exactly. Just found the page and was trying to figure it out.

As far as I can tell, you've finally built the perfect Brown Note Box, though. 😁

We've made a lot of changes to AMY's output volume patch-to-patch in amy#786 . If you want to try this again, do let us know if it fixes it for you.

I've noticed playing chords vs single notes are significantly louder (which shouldn't happen). I've also noticed that changing patches resets the volume level from what I had set in the web app as well. And volume seems to change as you go up the keyboard too (ie louder as pitch increases). Related to that the amyboard seems to be tuned much higher than all my other synths too. It's very shrill when playing a C4, but one my keyboards they are probably 2 octaves lower.

A big problem is that the volume setting can only be set in the web app. There isn't a way to control volume on the device itself. So with it constantly reseting the volume level it's very hard to use amyboard without being connected to the computer all the time.

I'm not sure i agree with this - a real life synth or piano is clearly louder the more notes you play at once?

On "volume level" - we should get specific about what you're referring to. Is it MIDI velocity? Or per-synth "level" (the slider in the AMYboard web app), or AMY's overall volume (amy.send(volume=)) ? You can certainly wire up level and volume to MIDI CCs in the amyboard web app and use another controller or rotary encoder to set volume.

It's sort of a messy UI that changing presets (I think you mean presets -- the drop down of 128 juno and 128 dx-7 presets?) also resets the per-synth level. We'll think about that and try to fix it.

Yes, volume change does increase for single note vs chord, but because sound perceived logarithmically it's not as noticeable. I think what I'm saying is that it's much more noticeable. And what I meant by "this shouldn't happen" is more that it doesn't make sense why what I'm saying would be true (per the logarithmic perception). But, it's does seem louder. I was thinking about getting a meter on it to double check by claims. And test the relative tuning as well.

I think it was the combo organ I tried. Playing it down around middle C on my synth was a bit loud (and pitched up), but tolerable. But, when I moved up an octave it shredded by ears. I had to yank the headphones off. That's what I meant by it seems to increase in volume as you go up. Now it could be that it was just too shrill a sound at that level, but it went from ok volume level to can't stand it in just a single octave.

Yes I did mean changing presets. The Amyboard seems to reset the volume level on the synth you load the preset onto.
