Idea

"Open in new tab" by default would be useful and mimic the action of most current drives like google drive.

This feature already exists as part of the CERN features flag.

Can this become a separate config variable? So people can set "open in new tab" as the default action?

To be clear, ctrl+click and cmd+click are not the same action as open in new tab. Both of these also select the file.
