Nikon NEF distorted image

Looks like NEF images can't be read any longer, see https://forum.image.sc/t/help-with-nikon-z-camera-raw-files-with-imagej-fiji/117752 .
Can replicate the problem with bftools 8.3.0, showinf opens the image as greyscale scramble.
