html`` with dynamically generated content?

I ended up getting this to work with badly-written D3, but I'd like to understand why my original attempt using html`` wasn't working right.

I'm dynamically generating a reference list for my project, and I wanted to add it as an unordered list. I create an array of strings, each of which is generated from several parts of the data, including html markup.

If I then do:

const htmlTest = pubList.sort().map(item => html`<li>${item}</li>`);

display(html`<ul>${htmlTest}</ul>`)

I successfully get a dynamically generated unordered list of the items, but all the HTML formatting is included in the string, rather than being interpreted, e.g.:

• Bamman, David, Crane, Gregory (2008) &ldquo;The Logic and Discovery of Textual Allusion,&rdquo; <i>Proceedings of the Second Workshop on Language Technology for Cultural Heritage Data (LaTeCH 2008)</i>: 2-3.

when in fact it should look like:

• Bamman, David, Crane, Gregory (2008) “The Logic and Discovery of Textual Allusion,” Proceedings of the Second Workshop on Language Technology for Cultural Heritage Data (LaTeCH 2008): 2-3.

I assume the problem lies somewhere in the interaction of html`` with my string, but I don't understand why or how to fix it. (If I don't include the html`` around <li>${item}</li>, then it doesn't interpret the <li>, either, so I suspect the problem lies in building up the string appropriately -- but adding html`` repeatedly throughout, every time I extended the string, didn't work either.)

Thanks, I think that clears things up! So I would hypothetically just copy the function at the bottom of the unsafe_html page and then use that instead of html``?
