A report on miscommunications on 8/4 demo day #8

Description

@tonyfast

This week we hosted our third materials science demo day. This event was significantly less successful than the past two events. It negatively impacted members our community. We apologize for the miscommunications and explain the situation below.

TLDR: Discord should NOT be used for Demo Day. Discord should be used for async communications.

This week we tried to on board folks to our [Materials Science and Manufacturing](https://discord.gg/d5jRrHykgH discord community). We sent out official communications with discord links that had time expiration or a maximum number of uses. These miscommunications led to a lot of confusion, dead links, blocked access, and extra communications that we would rather not have.

This week i chose the wrong tool for the job. Discord has too high of a barrier entry for folks to join demo day. discord will be a useful for async communications with the community and staying connected. Jitsi should be used for demo day because has the least barrier to entry and we can control the link. The discord should promote demo day events and demo day should promote the discord.

Sorry to anyone this inconvenienced. Please bear with us as we grow our Materials Science and Manufacturing Discord. We'll continue running demo days on Friday at 9am PST on Jitsi! Til then, if you want to discuss this incident or anything open science related, you can talk to us on Discord.
