Summary
When connecting to an external monitor through a dock, the display either freezes on the Plasma desktop or switches to a frozen black screen with journal output. The system is not responsive to mouse or keyboard input so it'snot possible to get to a TTY. This makes a hard reboot necessary.

The system uses the external display
