Steps to reproduce the bug
Load the site.

What did you expect to happen?
It loads almost instantly, like Lichess.

What happened instead?
It takes around 10 seconds to load. When joining a game, the load time is even worse, at around 15–30 seconds.

Operating system and browser version
Microsoft Edge 146.0.3856.72 (Official build) (64-bit) on Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS

As a developer, I can confidently say this is a pretty horrible bug report, but it was requested of me, and what I filled out is all I know.

It seems like, when loading a page for the first time, it loads just the top bar, then throws everything away and loads whole site again.

Seems the very first load of the site is slow indeed, possible because it have to download lots of assets from CDN for the site, but later when everything is coming from the browser cache it started instantly for me.

I also noticed that it has some default tracking detection and on very first start of the site it is checking our assets extremely long time, which may explain this issue:

Can you confirm that opening the site second time is OK?
Also can you see anything interesting in the dev console when you join a game and it is slow?
Also it is reproducible? I mean is it always slow?

Opening the second time was okay; opening a third time took 5 seconds?? Joining a game has been slow all three times I've done so.

1. Is this the same if you try with Chromium or Firefox?
2. Can you provide the content of the dev console (Ctrl+Shift+I)
3. May I ask you from which country are you trying to use pychess? I'm asking this because we never got complaints from EU but there was some similar reports from Russia and from China before. Then I removed the google fonts we used, but maybe there is something other which can cause regional problems. Idk...

Edge is not Chromium. It is based on Chromium, but Microsoft added lots of its own stuff like this tracking detection or AI support and possible lots of other shit. Anyhow if I set it to Basic it works much better! Maybe it can be configured in Exceptions as well, but I didn't tried it myself.

Also use https://www.pychess.org unless it will do that double load. If you are interested to the historic details read #1111

It's “better” for me, but it still takes around ten seconds. This image was taken with tracking prevention wholly off:

I wouldn't be doing something like that if I wasn't using an extension for tracking prevention anyway (making the built-in tool redundant).

I have the feeling that maybe your extension for tracking causes the same slowness what the built-in is doing.
Try to disable that as well to let us see that my assumption is correct or not.
Also if it has "Exceptions" or some kind of white list you can try to add cdn.jsdelivr.net there.

It clearly shows that loading ffish WASM modul file is rather slow in your case.

It isn't blocked in there, but I added an exception for both pychess.org and cd.jsdelivr.net and it was still bad:

Anyway, you should load the fish asynchronously, since that's causing a lot of lag. I'm not sure what's causing the rest of the lag, but the cache helps it, so it's likely another asset that just needs to be asynchronized.

Yeah, the daily puzzle loads about the same speed as the main site; it's just joining a game.
