Fix accumulated technical debt in the project

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

Technical debt is a fact of development decisions taken under constrains that have the potential to cause issues at a later time. Specifically issues due to lost knowledge (when new people join a project) are caused when these people are unware of these decisions and the impact they have for current project or future changes.

EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR

• collect a list of decisions here, with references to more details (i.e. issue comments) or textual explanaition (i.e. discussions or wiki items)
• use the list to agree on future changes to mitigate any negative impact(s) to future version of project

List of decisions causing technical debt

Status as of 21Mar26:

• The current handling of libdfuprog (please see for details in comment Build and static-link libdfuprog #428 (comment))

• approach to fix libdfuprog warnings/errors in PR Fix libdfuprog warnings/errors #435 with Android rewrite activities in mind

  • Copying dfu-programmer's dfu_make_idle and friends to libdfuprog.c on Android. Needs to be kept in sync if/when we update dfu-programmer.

• included a specific version of libusb in project, resulting in bug fixes and enhancements not applied automatically.

• included 2 versions of QCustomPlot in project, resulting in bug fixes and enhancements not applied automatically.
  Additionally questions related to code fixed minor time ticking bug #357 (comment).

  • (Desktop_Interface/ui_elements/qcp1
  • (Desktop_Interface/ui_elements/qcp2
    • conversion to qcp2 was abandoned, but V2 seems the only version with support for QT6 (see (Release notes]) and changelog for latest version

• enable automatic notification of changes in dependenies (aka dependabot.yml workflow) when issues identified in Remove failing/disabled dependabot workflow #436 have been fixed

• try to standardize packaging for all platforms using CMcake's CPack capabilities reasoning here including removal of 32bit version for Windows
