When competitors register on an Open Regatta, they are not given a choice of which race to join, but rather this is left up to an administrator.

Having a Race-level registration link, or giving competitors a choice of which races to join on a Regatta, would be a nice feature for administrators of events with larger numbers of competitors.

I haven't figured out an elegant workaround for this so I submit it for the backlog consideration.

Kwindoo supports this which annoys me whenever I have to hear about it!

Hi Jack,

thanks for this report. In our conceptual model of what we call a "Regatta" that has a "Leaderboard" we typically assume that there is a set of competitors registered, all of which are scored and shown in the leaderboard. In case the regatta splits its competitors into multiple fleets, typically we would assume a disjoint partitioning (example: yellow/blue fleet in a qualifying part of an opening series; or maybe ORC I, ORC II, ORC III) and with a separate start / race for each fleet per "Race Column" (leaderboard column / flight). There there is the variant where you have, e.g., a repeating "beer can" series where not everyone is showing up at each of the races, so they would get scored DNC for those where they don't show (see, e.g., the lyc.sapsailing.com Wednesday Night thing).

How would "joining races" work in practice? How would it have to change our model? What would the effect of not having joined a particular race be? And is this only about the "Open" registration style?

I wasn't thinking the data model would need to change, or anything about the leaderboards, just that the competitors could be given the ability to register on a race themselves whether it's set up for a specific fleet or not. Functionally, in my head, it would work the same way as if an Administrator had done so from the Admin Console.

The format of the larger events in our area are usually longer distance races where a handful of different courses are used in parallel. Longer course for the faster boats, shorter course for the slower boats, staggered starts, everyone (in PHRF theory) finishes close together for a drink. Within the races closely rated PHRF boats are scored in groups we refer to as divisions, what I think you'd probably call a fleet. There are divison scores and overall scores, for example here:

Allowing competitors to join an individual race by clicking a link as opposed to making an administrator assign them to races in the background could show up in the leaderboard in the same way, with DNCs sprinkled throughout as appropriate.

I do something similar as lyc.sapsailing.com for my weekly ongoing club series, some show up to races, some don't, sometimes I'll bother with fleets, sometimes I won't, the leaderboard functionality seems great as it is.

I think this would only be of benefit to Open Regattas. If an Admin has to take action per competitor to get them registered anyway, then it defeats the purpose the idea.

Trying to "translate" comment 2 and comment 3 into the terms of our internal model, would this mean that you'd like competitors to be able to specify the fleet they want to get added to as they register for an "Open Regatta" that has one or more series with more than one fleet? Thinking this further, are there criteria based on the boat class the competitor selected when registering, or the ToT/YS numbers entered? If so, we could even envision automating the fleet split, or at least suggesting a split to the Regatta owner...

It's likely I don't appreciate the significance of Series or Fleets in some way, but I made an amateur illustration of what I was thinking. Not surprisingly I think you're a few steps ahead of me.

I suppose this idea could apply at a Series or Fleet level as well, but it only occurred to me at what I'm calling a Race level because that's where an Admin has Competitor-specific clicking to do with or without multiple series or fleets involved.

Perhaps my mockup is the Canadian Rosetta stone, does it help a little? :)

In terms how our PHRF-minded Race Organizers decide which boats to bundle together into a Division and score against each other, is a topic of much bickering and wrinkly old faces trying to achieve the impossible goal of making everyone happy.

There is a lot of subjective opinions that go into this. Generally, there will be some obvious clumps of closely PHRF Rated boats that go together and prefer to compete against each other, but not always. Other weird stuff like "Fred hates Susie so don't put them together" or "We only have 3 sponsors coughing up 3 trophies so guess what, it's 3 divisions end of story."

You could come up with the most sophisticated and "correct" algorithm on earth for this and they probably wouldn't use it.

It's rare but this can also change last minute if loud enough grievances get raised, and Organizers can make mistakes too.
