[BUG] Built-in laptop microphone not capturing audio on Windows, external earphone microphone works #2028

Description

Description

Handy is not capturing audio when using my Windows laptop's built-in microphone.

When the built-in/default laptop microphone is selected, I can start speech-to-text recording, but Handy does not seem to receive any audio input and no transcription is produced.

However, when I connect an earphone/headset with a microphone and use that microphone, Handy works perfectly and speech is transcribed normally.

I initially thought this could be an issue with my laptop microphone, but I tested the built-in microphone separately and confirmed that it works correctly in other applications and in Windows microphone testing.

Therefore, this appears to be related to how Handy is detecting or accessing the built-in/default Windows microphone.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open Handy on Windows.
  2. Disconnect any external earphones/headsets/microphones.
  3. Make sure the laptop's built-in microphone is the default Windows input device.
  4. Start recording/transcription using Handy.
  5. Speak into the laptop's built-in microphone.
  6. Handy does not appear to capture the audio / no transcription is generated.
  7. Connect an earphone or headset with a microphone.
  8. Use the earphone/headset microphone as the input device.
  9. Start Handy transcription again.
  10. Audio is captured and transcription works normally.

Expected behavior

Handy should capture audio from the laptop's built-in microphone when it is selected or configured as the default microphone in Windows.

Speech-to-text should work the same way regardless of whether I am using:

  • The laptop's built-in microphone
  • A wired earphone microphone
  • An external microphone

Actual behavior

Built-in laptop microphone:

  • Microphone works correctly in Windows and other applications.
  • Handy does not appear to receive audio from it.
  • Speech-to-text/transcription does not work.

Earphone/headset microphone:

  • Handy detects/uses the microphone correctly.
  • Audio recording works.
  • Speech-to-text works normally.

Troubleshooting already performed

  • Confirmed that the laptop's built-in microphone works outside Handy.
  • Tested the microphone using Windows/other applications.
  • Confirmed Windows microphone permissions are enabled.
  • Tested Handy without an earphone connected.
  • Tested again after connecting an earphone with a microphone.
  • Issue consistently occurs with the built-in microphone, while the earphone microphone works.

System information

Handy version: v0.9.6

Operating System: Windows 11
