Steps to Reproduce

Find a post that has a link in it. Try to click it.

Expected Behaviour

It should open the link in the browser. I think hyperlinks should intercept click actions.

Actual Behaviour

It selects the post. If I double click the link, it opens the post in yet another window.

That’s due to the double-click behaviour. When enabled, it overrides the ability to click on links within the toot, since it can’t distinguish between a double-click to open in a new window and a regular click on a link.

I mentioned this in my recent poll — perhaps I need to make the explanation clearer.

This is one of the reasons, why I didn't want to implement double-click behaviour to open in a new window.

Oh, I see... This is a very surprising behaviour and is not what I expected from the poll. I think the user expectation for double-click-to-open would be that double clicking on a non-link part of the cell would lead to a new window opening. If it is between this behaviour and no-double-clicking-to-open-windows, then the latter is definitely the right choice. But I can't help thinking there is a middle ground.

First off, great swing at a Mastonaut alternative! Thanks for putting the effort into this project.

FWIW, I personally don't see value in double-clicking a post to open it in another window - the entire toot is already visible, and the right-click menu already gives you that option.

For an intuitive UX I think being able to click on what is visibly a link and opening that link is what pretty much all other (anti)social media apps out there do. If you're trying to win folks like myself over from Mastonaut, make it easier to use than Masto, not more difficult. :)

Here’s how I’d ideally like it to work:

• Clicking on links within the toot opens them in the browser
• Clicking on hashtags opens a pop-up menu
• Double-clicking outside the text bounds (in the empty white space) opens the toot in a new window
• Double-clicking on the text allows you to highlight or copy it

Implementing this behaviour isn’t straightforward due to technical constraints. At present, the toot content is rendered using SwiftUI, which conveniently supports custom emoji. If I were to switch to AppKit, I’d gain more granular control and get most of this behaviour out of the box – but I’d lose built-in support for custom emoji. That would mean writing a custom parser and handling caching myself.

I do intend to support this interaction model, but I want to do it properly. It’s definitely on the roadmap for future versions.
