Make the formatting on pypi and GitHub site the same

At the moment we push README.md to the PyPi and at the moment it breaks the formatting. Make the formatting the same on the GitHub and PyPi site.

Hello, I was looking into addressing this but got a little stuck. PyPi docs says that Github-style markdown is supported for the readme, but requires some minimum versions of setuptools, wheel, and twine for it to process correctly. It seems like setting versions of those would fix the issue, but since this is an older project without a pyproject.toml I wasn't sure how to approach it. Are there plans to update the packaging setup as part of the refresh?

Has this been resolved now? It looks like the formatting is correct on PyPi, though it is missing the list of popular projects which is present on github.
