Rotate an image along the X or Y axes? #3030

From what I can tell, rotation only seems to work along the Z axis. Is there any way to rotate along X or Y instead? I'd like to create an animated revolving effect, but it doesn't currently seem possible (unless I'm missing something). Screenshot of similar effect in GIMP to illustrate what I'm asking for.
