Code Quality Improvements & Standards

Current Status

Last Updated: 2025-11-09 Quality Score: 9.66/10 (Pylint) CI/CD Status: Passing (with warnings)

Critical Issues Fixed

1. Undefined __all__ Variables (E0603)

Issue: Pylint reports undefined variables in __all__ for lazy-loaded modules Fix: Moved pylint: disable=undefined-all-variable to separate line before __all__ declaration Location: __init__.py

# ✅ Correct format
# pylint: disable=undefined-all-variable
__all__ = ["DepthAnythingV2Model", "ModelBackend", "ModelVariant"]

2. Root Markdown File Limit

Issue: Test fails if > 10 markdown files in repository root Current Count: 6/10 (within limit) Standard: Move session summaries and temporary documentation to docs/sessions/

Root MD Files (Allowed):

  • README.md
  • CONTRIBUTING.md
  • CODE_OF_CONDUCT.md
  • SECURITY.md
  • CHANGELOG.md
  • LICENSE (if .md)

Move to docs/:

  • Session summaries (SESSION_SUMMARY_*.md → docs/sessions/)
  • Technical specs (TIFF_FIX_SUMMARY.md → docs/technical/)
  • Phase documentation (PHASE_*_COMPLETE.md → docs/phases/)

3. Trailing Whitespace

Status: Auto-fixed by pre-commit hook Implementation: autopep8 in CI/CD workflow Files Fixed: 68 files in latest commit

Pylint Warnings (Non-Blocking)

High-Priority Warnings to Address

  1. W1309: F-strings without interpolation (600+ instances)

    # ❌ Avoid
    print(f"Processing complete")

    # ✅ Use
    print("Processing complete")
  2. W0621: Redefining outer scope names (300+ instances)

    # ❌ Avoid
    def process(temp_dir):  # temp_dir from outer scope
        pass

    # ✅ Use
    def process(output_dir):  # Different name
        pass
  3. W0102: Dangerous default arguments (2 instances)

    # ❌ Avoid
    def process(items=[]):  # Mutable default
        pass

    # ✅ Use
    def process(items=None):
        items = items or []
  4. W0707: Raise missing from (5 instances)

    # ❌ Avoid
    except ImportError as e:
        raise ImportError("Failed") from e

    # ✅ Use
    except ImportError as e:
        raise ImportError("Failed") from e
  5. C0413: Wrong import position (8 instances)

    • Move imports to top of file
    • Place module docstring first
    • Then all imports before code

Medium-Priority Improvements

  1. R1714: Consider using 'in' (10 instances)

    # ❌ Avoid
    if dtype == np.float32 or dtype == np.float64:

    # ✅ Use
    if dtype in (np.float32, np.float64):
  2. C0201: Consider iterating dictionary (3 instances)

    # ❌ Avoid
    for key in dict.keys():

    # ✅ Use
    for key in dict:
  3. W1510: subprocess.run without check (20+ instances)

    # ❌ Avoid
    subprocess.run(cmd)

    # ✅ Use
    subprocess.run(cmd, check=True)
    # or
    subprocess.run(cmd, check=False)  # Explicit

Proactive Quality Standards

Automated Safeguards Implemented

  1. Pre-commit Quality Check

    • Location: .github/workflows/quality_standards.py
    • Runs: Root MD limit, flake8 critical, auto-fixes whitespace
    • Execution: Before every commit
  2. CI/CD Workflow Updates

    • Autopep8 auto-fix and commit
    • Flake8 critical errors (E9, F63, F7, F82)
    • Pylint with exit-zero (non-blocking warnings)
    • Root markdown count validation
  3. Test Suite Enforcement

    • 549 tests passing
    • test_codebase_structure.py enforces:
      • Max 10 root markdown files
      • Proper directory structure
      • Documentation organization

Development Workflow Standards

Before Committing

# 1. Run quality check
python .github/workflows/quality_standards.py

# 2. Run fast tests
make test-fast

# 3. Check markdown count
find . -maxdepth 1 -name "*.md" -type f | wc -l  # Must be ≤ 10

# 4. Stage and commit
git add .
git commit -m "feat: descriptive message"

Code Review Checklist

  • No trailing whitespace
  • Imports at top of file
  • F-strings only with interpolation
  • No mutable default arguments
  • Exception chains use from
  • subprocess.run has explicit check=
  • Type hints for public APIs
  • Docstrings for classes/functions

Quality Metrics

Current Scores

  • Pylint: 9.66/10
  • Flake8 Critical: 0 errors
  • Test Coverage: 549 passing
  • CI/CD: All workflows passing

Target Scores

  • Pylint: 9.80/10 (reduce W1309, W0621)
  • Flake8 Critical: 0 errors (maintain)
  • Test Coverage: > 90%
  • Documentation: Complete API docs

Recurring Issues to Monitor

1. F-String Overuse (W1309)

Prevalence: 600+ instances Impact: Low (style issue) Action: Gradual refactoring in modified files

2. Variable Name Shadowing (W0621)

Prevalence: 300+ instances Impact: Medium (readability) Action: Rename when working in affected modules

3. Import Positioning (C0413)

Prevalence: 8 instances Impact: Low (style issue) Action: Fix immediately when editing file

Continuous Improvement Plan

Phase 1: Immediate (Sprint 1)

  • Fix undefined __all__ variables
  • Auto-fix trailing whitespace
  • Implement quality check script
  • Move session MD files to docs/sessions/
  • Fix C0413 import positioning (8 files)

Phase 2: Short-term (Sprint 2-3)

  • Reduce W1309 by 50% (fix in high-traffic files)
  • Fix all W0102 dangerous defaults (2 instances)
  • Fix all W0707 raise-missing-from (5 instances)
  • Add explicit check= to subprocess.run (20 instances)

Phase 3: Long-term (Ongoing)

  • Reduce W0621 variable shadowing in tests
  • Achieve 9.80/10 pylint score
  • Document all public APIs
  • Expand test coverage to 90%

Best Practices Going Forward

1. Write Quality Code from Start

# Good example
def process_image(
    input_path: Path,
    output_dir: Path,
    quality: int = 95
) -> Dict[str, Any]:
    """Process luxury real estate image.

    Args:
        input_path: Path to source image
        output_dir: Directory for outputs
        quality: JPEG quality (1-100)

    Returns:
        Processing statistics dict
    """
    if not input_path.exists():
        raise FileNotFoundError(f"Image not found: {input_path}")

    result = subprocess.run(
        ["convert", str(input_path), "output.jpg"],
        check=True,
        capture_output=True
    )

    return {"status": "success", "size": output_dir.stat().st_size}

2. Use Quality Tools

# Before commit
black .                          # Format
isort .                          # Sort imports
flake8 .                         # Lint
pylint modified_file.py          # Deep check
pytest tests/                    # Test

3. Keep Dependencies Updated

pip install --upgrade pip
pip install --upgrade -r requirements.txt
pip list --outdated

CI/CD Workflow Summary

Pre-commit Checks

  1. Autopep8 auto-format
  2. Flake8 critical errors
  3. Pylint (warnings only)
  4. Root markdown count
