Feature request : cage

Hello
As I see hyprland starting for sysc-greet every boot, I wondered if another WM would be faster
I tried putting

command = "sh -c 'XDG_CACHE_HOME=/tmp/greeter-cache HOME=/var/lib/greeter cage -s -- kitty --start-as=fullscreen --config=/etc/greetd/kitty.conf /usr/local/bin/sysc-greet && pkill cage'"

in my config.toml of greetd, but it loooks like it still boots up hyprland for the greeter, although it is definitely using cage as the size of the font is lil' different

If you ever do this feature think about being able to change keyboard layout, haven't figured that on my own yet

PS: I made a piiink custom theme for the greeter, do you want me to upload it?
(also quite want to know how your awesome greeter works lol)

Hey emma, appreciate the kind words, definitely feel free to share the pink theme, always cool to see what people do with sysc-greet. I've been working on a Punisher theme lately but struggling to get syscgo to render it correctly.

On cage I actually looked at this pretty early in development and had the same thought, it's the most minimal compositor so should be fastest. The problem was getting it to work reliably enough, and honestly even if I got it fully working the startup time difference would be a few milliseconds. Sway (even niri IMO) is already pretty lean if you're on the hyprland variant and want something lighter.

The keyboard layout issue with cage is also a good example of why the current approach makes more sense e.g. full XKB support out of the box, with cage its a little harder.

Draft PR for Cage greeter path: #78

Summary: Cage Lite (Kitty-only, no gSlapper wallpapers) added as the recommended greetd backend. Hyprland greeter support remains functional but is deprecated — removal planned in ~3 months.

Design spec + implementation plan in the PR. Cagebreak wallpaper-parity spike is Phase 2.

(I just had an issue with greetd not reading its new config until I rebooted for the keyboard layout patch, which is rather well explained in your doc btw :)
