Week 7 (5/6,8): Social Computing #7

Description

@Gio-Choi

This week we explore the emergence of the computer as a novel communication and interconnection device, as a lead-up to the internet, world-wide web, social media and more. With the PLATO system at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and ARPANET wiring together a network of universities, academics and students, real-time and asynchronous communication between people and linking people and information (e.g., the world’s libraries) became an increasing reality. What is the relationship between a network of computers (e.g., ARPA’s network) and a network of people that interact on it—does the human network drive the machine one, the reverse, or do they exist separate but equal from one another? What are consequences of a global computer network for sociability and society? What were consequences of 1960s and 1970s society on computer networks?
