PartDesign: Revolution Two directions

Proposal description

This proposal is to do for revolution tool the same thing as is currently being done for the extrude tool in this grant proposal : #41

ie make the tool able to handle both sides independantly.

Why that first grant was 500 and this one is 1800? Because that feature was much longer to do than anticipated. And the nitpicking on the PR to get merge is high and require lot of additional work.

I'd love for the Revolution tool to be on par with the Pad tool, too. Although I won't find much room for it, for my usage off course. I also agree that the criticisms are too distracting, but I also understand wanting it to be complete when it comes to adding features.

What does @FreeCAD/design-working-group think about this feature?

It should of course have feature parity with pad.

I don't see any particular issue with this, but I feel like the usefulness is probably limited. The biggest thing will be getting the task panel right. If possible, I ask to see a mock-up of what you intend to do with the UI so we can discuss before that part of code gets written. If you'd like me to draft a proposal I could do that also.

Your other grant went a little further than simply adding a feature, turning it into a bit of an interface overhaul. I think this grant could be factored in as well. Considering it that way, it's a pretty good offer. Also, since you are doing the first and most popular one, I believe the process here will take less time.

As much as I understand your reasons for putting a higher price, it seems to me a bit steep for a "pay for a feature", and generally something a community-based project such as FreeCAD should avoid doing, because it kind of desmotivates everyone else working for free on FreeCAD...

The FPA's voting on grant proposals for the Quarter 3 2025 has been completed, and I regret to inform you that this grant funding was not selected.

Our technical committee defined this feature as "nice to have," but it raised many uncertainties regarding the grant allocation per feature. Many FPA members acted based on these uncertainties. Furthermore, the fact that the feature was considered merely "nice to have" by the technical committee prevented many individuals from voting in favor. Additionally, the requested amount of compensation also led to some questions.

The rejection of the funding of a proposal for a quarter by the FPA does not mean that the relevant project has been rejected by FreeCAD management. If you wish, you can proceed with your proposal without funding. Additionally, the rejection of your proposal for this period does not prevent you from submitting the same or a similar proposal in future periods, nor does it create any bias against its acceptance.
