✅ COMPLETED: Server Integration (Atoll/DynamicIsland App)

Phase 1: XPC Service ✅

  • ✅ Created ExtensionXPCService.swift implementing AtollXPCServiceProtocol
  • ✅ Created ExtensionXPCServiceHost.swift with mach service com.ebullioscopic.Atoll.xpc
  • ✅ Implemented authorization request flow (auto-authorize pending entries)
  • ✅ Added server-side descriptor validation (size limits, bundle ID checks)
  • ✅ Implemented rate limiting to prevent abuse

Phase 2: Extension Managers ✅

  • ✅ Created ExtensionLiveActivityManager.swift

    • Receives activity descriptors from XPC service
    • Stores active third-party activities
    • Integrated with ContentView multi-activity resolver
    • Respects priority system alongside system activities
  • ✅ Created ExtensionLockScreenWidgetManager.swift

    • Receives widget descriptors from XPC service
    • Renders widgets on lock screen using SkyLight
    • Handles position validation and collision detection
  • ✅ Created ExtensionAuthorizationManager.swift

    • Stores authorized bundle IDs in Defaults
    • Provides authorization check API
    • Handles revocation and scope management

Phase 3: Settings UI ✅

  • ✅ Added .extensions case to SettingsTab enum in SettingsView.swift
  • ✅ Created ExtensionsSettings.swift showing:
    • List of apps requesting access with status badges
    • Toggle to enable/disable each app and scopes
    • Per-app action buttons (Authorize, Deny, Revoke, Remove)
    • App icons, names, authorization status, activity timestamps
    • Rate limit monitoring and reset controls
    • Search/filter functionality

Phase 4: Rendering Integration ✅

  • ✅ Updated ContentView.swift to include extension activities

    • resolveMusicSecondaryLiveActivity() includes extension payloads
    • resolvedExtensionStandalonePayload() for standalone activities
    • Album art badge rendering for extension icons
    • Right wing content for extension supplements
  • ✅ Created SwiftUI views for rendering third-party activity content:

    • ExtensionLiveActivityViews.swift - Notch live activities (standalone + music supplements)
    • ExtensionLockScreenWidgetView.swift - Lock screen widgets
    • ExtensionRenderingHelpers.swift - Shared conversion utilities
  • ✅ Implemented icon rendering:

    • SF Symbol support
    • Base64 image decoding
    • App icon fetching
    • Composite icon views (leading + badge)

Phase 5: Validation & Safety ✅

  • ✅ Bundle ID verification (matches caller's bundle ID)
  • ✅ Data size validation (5MB limits via ExtensionDescriptorValidator)
  • ✅ Text length validation (50/100 char limits)
  • ✅ Widget size constraints (640×360 max)
  • ✅ Rate limiting infrastructure (tracks timestamps per bundle)
  • ✅ Capacity enforcement (max activities/widgets per app)

Phase 6: Testing 🚧

  • Create sample third-party app demonstrating:

    • Authorization flow
    • Live activity presentation/update/dismiss
    • Lock screen widget
    • Error handling
    • Callback handling
  • Test multi-app scenarios:

    • Priority conflict resolution
    • Music coexistence
    • Simultaneous widgets
  • Test edge cases:

    • Atoll quit while activities active
    • Authorization revocation mid-session
    • Invalid descriptors
    • Oversized data

Next Steps

Immediate (Critical Path)

  1. Create AtollXPCService - Server-side XPC listener
  2. ExtensionPermissionManager - Authorization storage
  3. Settings Tab - Permission UI
  4. ExtensionLiveActivityManager - Activity renderer
  5. ContentView Integration - Multi-activity resolver update

Secondary (Enhancement)

  1. ExtensionLockScreenWidgetManager - Widget support
  2. Sample App - Testing and demonstration
  3. Validation Layer - Security hardening
  4. Documentation - Atoll-side architecture docs

Polish

  1. Error Handling - User-facing error messages
  2. Performance - Rate limiting, caching
  3. Accessibility - VoiceOver support
  4. Testing - Unit tests, integration tests

Design Decisions

Priority System

  • System activities (Timer, Reminder, Focus) have implicit priorities
  • Extension activities compete with same priority rules
  • Music coexistence flag allows sharing notch space
  • User dismissal overrides all priorities

Validation Strategy

  • Client-side: Catch obvious errors early (invalid data, size limits)
  • Server-side: Security checks (bundle ID, rate limits, authorization)
  • Two-layer approach prevents malicious/malformed requests

XPC Security

  • Mach service requires Atoll to be running (prevents unauthorized access)
  • Bundle ID verification ensures caller identity
  • Authorization stored per-app prevents privilege escalation
  • Rate limiting prevents DoS attacks

Data Transfer

  • All models are Codable for efficient XPC serialization
  • Images/animations sent as Base64 (validated size limits)
  • Metadata dictionary for future extensibility
  • Version checks ensure compatibility

Known Limitations

  1. Requires Atoll running - No offline queuing (by design)
  2. 24-hour max duration - Auto-dismiss prevents orphaned activities
  3. Rate limit: 1/second - Prevents spam, encourages batching
  4. 5MB asset limit - Prevents memory bloat
  5. macOS 13+ - Platform requirement for modern Swift concurrency

Future Enhancements

  • Persistent activities - Survive Atoll restarts
  • Rich notifications - Deep linking from activities
  • Animation API - Custom SwiftUI animations
  • Interaction callbacks - Click/tap handling
  • Group activities - Multiple related activities
  • Theme support - Light/dark mode customization
  • Analytics - Usage metrics for developers

Timeline Estimate

  • XPC Service: 2-3 hours
  • Permission System: 1-2 hours
  • Settings UI: 1-2 hours
  • Activity Rendering: 3-4 hours
  • Widget Rendering: 3-4 hours
  • Validation Layer: 2-3 hours
  • Integration Testing: 2-3 hours
  • Sample App: 2-3 hours

Total: ~16-24 hours of focused development
