Massachusetts example not working for non-CUDA

The input file is as follows:

I am running it on LLNL/LC/Dane (MPI-only, no CUDA) with 20 MPI ranks (domain as 20 boxes). The simulation freezes while infecting the agents. Here is the screen output:

If I switch to random initial infections,

then the simulation crashes with the following message:
